3,000 dalits in Tamil Nadu to convert on December 6

December 05, 2002 08:56 IST

Protesting against the Tamil Nadu government's anti-conversion law, which came into force on Tuesday, over 3,000 activists of the All India Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Federation are to embrace Buddhism and Christianity in Chennai on December 6.

Dalit Panthers of India convener R Thirumavalavan on Wednesday told reporters that 3,000 dalits would convert at a function organised on the death anniversary of renowned dalit leader Dr B R Ambedkar.

He said it was disappointing to note that despite protests from minorities, Tamil Nadu Governor P S Ramamohan Rao had given his assent to the controversial Act.
