NSG team probes Mumbai blast wreckage, defuses gelatin bomb

December 03, 2002 19:19 IST

A team of the National Security Guards on Tuesday afternoon carried out a detailed investigation into the wreckage of last night's explosion at Ghatkopar and defused an explosive recovered in another bus at SEEPZ in Andheri in suburban Mumbai.

The experts arrived from New Delhi on Tuesday morning to assist the Mumbai police in examining the nature of explosive used in the blast, polices sources said.

The blast, in a bus at Ghatkopar, in northeast Mumbai, had claimed two lives and left 38 injured.

The adjacent buildings at SEEPZ were evacuated this morning even as the fire brigade personnel threw a cordon around the area.

The team spent nearly 40 minutes before the gelatin sticks and the time detonator was separated from the bomb, which could have caused serious damage, sources said.

Security has been stepped up across the state and sniffer dogs were pressed into service to detect explosives, if any, at public places and police stations, they said.
