Vilas Deshmukh rushes to Delhi

Though official sources said Deshmukh would be paying a courtesy call on President A P J Abdul Kalam and Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, party sources claimed the main item on the agenda is a meeting with the Congress high command.

On Wednesday, 11 independent legislators, including nine ministers, had issued a statement that their support should not be taken for granted if there was a change of leadership indicating that all is not well with the Congress-NCP-led alliance government.

A major crisis in June had threatened the Congress-NCP-led alliance government in the state when some MLAs withdrew supports to the government. Deshmukh had then managed to save his government.
