Five securitymen, including a senior army officer, and ten militants were among the 17 people killed on Tuesday in renewed violence in Jammu and Kashmir.
The escalation in violence comes two days before the first notification to be issued by the Election Commission.
Militants on Tuesday evening forced their entry into the house of Khazir Mohammad, a village headman at Kuchwamuqam in the northern Baramulla district, and fired on him. He succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to a hospital.
Militants also shot at and killed two cops of the Jammu and Kashmir police in Srinagar.
Immediately after the killing of the two policemen the Deputy Inspector General of Police Farooq Ahmed convened a meeting of top officers to review the situation.
Elsewhere in the state, two unidentified militants and a Sub-Inspector, Ravi Kumar, were killed in a fierce gunbattle at Nagri Kupwara in north Kashmir.
Colonel H S Sherwat and a havaldar of the Rashtriya Rifles were killed in a powerful landmine explosion at Kund in the Marmat area of the Doda district. Police said Colonel Sherwat and his two bodyguards received critical injuries. The officer and one of his bodyguards succumbed to their injuries while being shifted to the hospital.
The army also killed eight militants while foiling three infiltration attempts across the LoC at the Machil sector and the Tangdar area of the Kupwara district.
Militants also attacked a heavily guarded police station at Shopian with a hand grenade. Two jawans of the Railway Protection Force, who were in Shopian for election duties, were injured.
