Delhi police denies Madhu Sharma is being harassed

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Delhi police on Monday denied that Madhu Sharma, wife of senior Indian Police Service officer and prime accused in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case R K Sharma, was being harassed by investigating officers.

Madhu Sharma, who in an emotional outburst on Thursday had accused Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan of being involved in Shivani's murder, met the National Human Rights Commission on Monday and sought protection for herself and her daughters.

The request was rejected by the commission.

Later, talking to journalists outside the commission's office, Madhu Sharma alleged there was a constant threat to her family from the Delhi police and that an attempt was made to kidnap her.

Joint Commissioner of Police Umesh Katna, however, said there was no truth in the allegations.

"We do not want to open another front by kidnapping her," he said. He also denied that Madhu Sharma's lawyer Dinesh Mathur's phone was being tapped. "We are not doing anything of the sort," he said.

Katna asked the media to crosscheck with his department before filing any reports on the murder case. "Please understand that this is a very sensitive case and we are wasting a lot of time in denying and clarifying stories appearing in newspapers," he said.

He, however, admitted that his officers had questioned Amberish Mishra, a friend of Pragati - Madhu Sharma's daughter.

"It is true that we had questioned him. We would question anyone who would lead us to R K Sharma," said Additional Commissioner of Police Qamar Ahmed.

Asked if the Delhi police planned to carry out DNA tests on R K Sharma as and when he is arrested, Katna said he would like to reserve his comments on the matter.

Three persons -- Sri Bhagwan, Pradeep Sharma and Satya Prakash -- have been arrested so far the in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case.

Shivani was murdered on January 23, 1999 in her apartment in Navkunj Housing Society.
