R K Sharma's family approaches rights panel

Alleging harassment by the Delhi police, the family members of Indian Police Service officer Ravi Kant Sharma, the prime accused in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case, on Monday approached the National Human Rights Commission.

NHRC Chairman Justice J S Verma refused to meet them and directed them to approach the commission's Director General, Y N Srivastava, sources said.

Justice Verma felt that it would not be proper for him to talk to them at this stage, the sources said.

The IPS officer's wife, Madhu Sharma, has alleged that the Delhi police is harassing her family in Panchkula and wants to implicate her husband in the murder case.

Pragati Sharma, her daughter, has sought an appointment with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
