Punjab employees 'refuse' J&K poll duty

Punjab government employees have 'refused' to go for election duty in Jammu and Kashmir owing to the 'abnormal' situation there.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Punjab Subordinate Services Federation and its 42 affiliated employee unions from various departments in Chandigarh, PSSF general secretary Ranbir Dhillon said in a statement on Monday.

Dhillon regretted that the Punjab government was sending 4,000 employees to Jammu and Kashmir 'while the situation was abnormal'.

Punjab employees will not go there for a month to face the bullets of the militants, Dhillon said.

Militants killed 18 employees during the February 1992 election to the state assembly in Punjab, "and the administration under governor's rule did nothing for the families", the release stated.

Since the Jammu & Kashmir employees conduct the Lok Sabha election in the state, they should also conduct the assembly election, Dhillon said.
