Mahajan to sue Madhu Sharma for defamation

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan has decided to sue Madhu Sharma -- wife of Ravi Kant Sharma, the Indian Police Service officer who is the main accused in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case -- for criminal defamation.

His decision came after the Bharatiya Janata Party rejected the allegations as 'malicious and malafide' and advised Mahajan to sue Madhu Sharma, BJP spokesman Arun Jaitley said on Friday.

"The Bharatiya Janata Party wholly rejects the malafide and malicious allegations made by the wife of a fugitive and suspected killer against Union Minister Pramod Mahajan," Jaitley, who is a lawyer, said. "This is clearly a diversionary tactic at the behest of an accused against whom the Delhi police claims to have collected evidence of involvement in the murder of Shivani Bhatnagar."

Jaitley described as 'regrettable' the prominence given to 'self-serving' statements, as 'political names are capable of making big news, even when there is no shred of evidence to connect them with the unfortunate incident.'

He said the BJP appealed to all sections of society to await the final outcome of the police investigation.

In response to a question, the BJP spokesman said the Delhi police were best placed to answer why the case, languishing for the last three years, had suddenly been reopened. He pointed out that Delhi police had proceeded on the case after making a breakthrough by arresting a few people.

"There is no such thing as 'activising' a case at a given time," he said.

He termed Madhu Sharma's allegation as being 'beneath contempt' which did not merit a response.
