Police raid Sharma's house twice, draw a blank

The Delhi police remained ignorant of the whereabouts of Haryana's Inspector General of Police (prisons) Ravi Kant Sharma, prime suspect in journalist Shivani Bhatnagar's murder, even as they raided his residence in Panchkula for the second day on Sunday and searched other places in Delhi, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh.

A 16-member team of the Delhi police carried out searches twice at Sharma's residence and seized a telephone diary to help locate acquaintances who could be giving him shelter, police sources in New Delhi said.

The team led by Hemant Sharma searched the residence at 0630 IST and again at 1215 IST, but failed to trace their man. They, however, took possession of a telephone diary belonging to Ravi Sharma and some other documents. They also questioned Komal, one of the IGP's two daughters.

Police teams conducted raids at several other places in the capital, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh based on the addresses found in the telephone diary.

The sources refused to divulge details of the places raided, saying it would hamper the investigation. "We are maintaining pressure on him," Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) U K Katna said in Delhi.

In Chandigarh, counsel for Ravi Kant Sharma denied that the officer's wife had ever attempted suicide because of her husband's alleged adulterous relationship with the Delhi-based journalist.

Counsel Ravi Sharma described as "false and baseless" the report in a section of the media to this effect and said "both Ravi Kant Sharma and Madhu Sharma had excellent relations as husband and wife".

He told the Press Trust of India that since S P Bedi, father-in-law of Ravi Kant Sharma, had died in 1976, the question of Bedi influencing his postings did not arise. Bedi was an assistant editor with a Chandigarh-based newspaper.

The counsel said they were exploring the possibility of taking action against those maligning the families.
