Gujarat govt yet to start rehabilitation process: NHRC representative

Even after two months of communal frenzy in Gujarat, the state government is yet to begin its rehabilitation process with no concrete relief measures evident, the National Human Rights Commission's special representative P G J Nampoothri said in Delhi on Tuesday.

Nampoothri, who recently presented a detailed independent report to the NHRC for its consideration, said more than 3,500 complaints, including that of destruction, loot and damage in the state, has been reported to the commission.

"We have received only 20 cases of rape," he said about the cases of crime against women.

However, when asked how was that possible since a number of reports of extreme sexual abuse against women have been reported so far from various parts of the state, Nampoothri said, "In cases where a women is raped and then killed, a case of murder is registered, and not rape. Secondly, many may not have come forward to talk about the atrocities."
