Mamata wants Modi dismissed, but to support NDA

Why should the prime minister take the blame for a chief minister's failure?

This question was asked by Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee who demanded Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's dismissal in the Lok Sabha while participating in the discussion on the censure motion on the Gujarat violence.

She described the communal violence in Gujarat as 'black history' but announced her party's support to the NDA government.

"This (Gujarat) is an issue of national concern. You have the examples of Sushma Swaraj (former Delhi chief minister) and Rajnath Singh (in Uttar Pradesh). Why can't you change Modi?" Banerjee asked.

"Why should the entire nation suffer for a particular man? Sacrifices have to be made. We (the NDA) sacrificed on the Tehelka issue. On this issue, Paswan sacrificed his ministerial post and I congratulate him," Banerjee said.

Blaming politicians for the Gujarat violence and describing it as a 'heinous crime', Banerjee suggested holding of a peace march in the strife-torn state to be led jointly by the prime minister and the leader of the opposition.
