DMK concerned about Gujarat, but will vote for NDA

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, a key constituent of the National Democratic Alliance, expressed concern on Monday about the continuing violence in Gujarat, but said it would not support the Opposition-sponsored censure motion in Parliament.

Former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi told reporters in Chennai after a meeting of the DMK legislature party, "We respect the sentiments expressed by the Opposition in the resolution, but cannot support it as we are part of NDA."

He said the DMK would not allow even a "slight deviation" by the NDA from the national agenda for governance, which had stated that the interests of the minorities would be protected. "It is a matter of concern that communal clashes continue unabated in Gujarat," he remarked.

On the decision of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Samata Party to table a resolution in the Lok Sabha under Rule 184 on the law-and-order situation in Bihar, he said it would only serve to bring up more such issues.

On the Marumalarchi DMK general council describing as a historic blunder the DMK's neutrality on the Tamil Nadu assembly's resolution demanding the extradition of Sri Lankan rebel V Prabhakaran, he said, "We can go only up to this level. We are not like MDMK chief Vaiko."

He said sending the Indian Peace-Keeping Force to Sri Lanka and the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi were both blunders. "No one can justify Rajiv Gandhi's assassination," he said.

He said the DMK would boycott the assembly on Monday to protest against the suspension of Parithi Ilamvazhuthi for the rest of the session. He said the Opposition was not being allowed to have its say in the assembly.
