Indefinite curfew in six police station areas of Baroda

One person was stabbed to death and 13 were injured, eight of them in police firing, in a fresh bout of violence in Baroda on Saturday afternoon, prompting authorities to clamp indefinite curfew in six police station areas, police said.

Police said one person was stabbed to death in Yakutpura area.

With this, the toll in violence in the city since Friday night has mounted to two and the renewed violence in Gujarat since Sunday has claimed 46 lives.

Eight persons received bullet injuries when police opened fire in Yakutpura, Fatehpura, Bhoiwada, Ajabdi Mill and other areas to disperse rioting mobs, which indulged in arson and violence, causing stab injuries to five persons.

The injured have been admitted to the SSG hospital.

Indefinite curfew was clamped in Panigate, Wadi, Raopura, Karelibaug and Navapura police station areas following communal clashes in Bhoiwada, Fatehpura and other areas on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti," police said.

Police resorted to a lathicharge and burst several tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

Police Commissioner Din Dayal Tuteja decided to impose indefinite curfew to prevent a flare-up, police said, adding one person was injured in a stabbing incident in Bhoiwada where police opened fire to quell rioting mobs.

A company of the Rapid Action Force has been staging a flag march in the city and the situation is under control, police said.
