One killed, eight hurt in Baroda violence

Mobs armed with swords, pipes and other sharp weapons came out on the streets after an alleged attack on a place of worship, they said.

The violence later spread to Bavamanpura, Twaiwada, Panigat, Chitekhan Gali, Fatehpura and other places where mobs torched shops and houses, they said.

Police fired sixty-seven rounds and burst 35 tear gas shells to disperse the mobs, they said.

Later, Police Commissioner Din Dayal Tuteja said the situation was under control and that the police has been verifying reports of a bomb explosion in which three persons were injured.

Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel staged flag marches in the two areas, sources said.

One person was injured in the police firing in Wadi police station area while two persons were injured when some unidentified persons opened fire in the Panigat area, police added.

Night curfew will continue in the Baroda city area as a precautionary measure, they said.

In other areas of the city, the situation was under control, police said adding night curfew was in force in ten police station areas.

In the violence-affected areas of Shahpur, curfew was relaxed for four hours on Saturday morning.
