Vajpayee says he is not speaking in different voices

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Wednesday brushed aside criticism that he was speaking in different voices at different places on the violence in Gujarat.

Speaking as the chief guest at a function to celebrate the 75th birth anniversary of former prime minister Chandrashekhar, Vajpayee said had Parliament strongly condemned the Godhra incident, the subsequent developments in Gujarat would not have taken place.

"Parliament did not pay enough attention as it was busy with some other issue," he said.

Vajpayee said he was not defending what had happened in Gujarat and refuted the charge that he was speaking in different voices at different places.

The prime minister later heard Chandrashekhar launching a strident attack on the Sangh Parivar and asking him to tell his "friends" to see reason so that the country is not taken along the path to destruction.
