SC issues notice to Centre, Modi on Gujarat

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to Centre, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Nodi, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bharatiya Janata Party on a petition seeking appointment of a special investigating team to probe into the communal riots in the state to fix responsibility of state government and concerned police officials.

A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice S P Bharucha, Justice S V Patil and Justice H K Sema also issued notices to the Gujarat government and the state director general of police on a PIL filed by three social activists -- Mallika Sarabhai, Digant Oza and Indukumar Jani.

The petitioners also sought quashing of Gujarat government's notification appointing retired high court judge K G Shah to probe into the riots, which started after two bogies of the Sabarmati Express were torched on February 27.

They said that an appropriate direction be given to National Human Rights Commission to conduct the inquiry.
