Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf is likely to formally launch his campaign to retain his presidency ahead of the October elections, from Lahore on April nine by addressing a public meeting at the Minar-e-Pakistan, a monument built to mark the independence of the country, an official said.
"We have requested the president to launch the campaign from Lahore, which has always taken the lead in every matter of national importance," Lahore district local body official Amir Mahmood told reporters in Islamabad on Thursday night.
"The Lahorites would get him elected as president for the next five years," he claimed.
Musharraf recently said he planned to make use of the district nazims and naib nazims (district level officials) to mobilise people for his campaign as well as for the voting in the referendum.
He has also called for a meeting of the local body officials in Islamabad on Saturday to discuss their role in the campaign.
Minister for Law and Human Rights Khalid Ranjha refuting allegations that the referendum was illegal and unconstitutional.
He told the media that in order to continue the policies aimed at the welfare of the people, Musharraf must continue as president.
