Nepal king eases restriction on press freedom, political parties

The Nepal government on Thursday relaxed the restrictions on the media and political parties imposed in November last year as part of its efforts to deal with Maoist violence.

A state of emergency had been declared then and the Nepal government issued an ordinance curtailing some individual rights, press freedom and normal functioning of political parties.

King Gyanendra issued an order allowing free publication and broadcast of any subject except those which directly or indirectly help terrorist activities.

But no public comment, which may adversely affect the security operations or demoralise the security personnel, can be made, a statement from the royal palace said.

Political parties have been allowed to organise public meetings, gatherings and conferences that do not directly or indirectly help the terrorists.

However, prior permission has be taken from the concerned chief district officer, the statement added.
