Editors Guild team begins hearing on Gujarat violence

A series of representations were made by the people in Ahmedabad on Monday about the recent violence in Gujarat to a visiting team of Editors' Guild of India, which is on a three-day fact-finding tour, sources said.

The team comprised eminent journalists Dileep Padgoankar and B G Verghese, while a third member Khalid Ansari was expected later in the evening, sources said.

Dileep Padgaonkar is the executive managing editor of the Times of India, B G Verghese is a former editor of the Indian Express and Khalid Ansari is the chairman of the Mid-Day group of publications.

Among other things, the team would be probing allegations of 'biased media coverage' during the violence across Gujarat since February 27 and is likely to visit Godhra and Baroda.

Violence-hit people, representatives from non-government organisations and the media met the Guild team to present their views about the unprecedented violence witnessed in parts of the state after the Sabarmati Express carrying some 'Ram sevaks' returning from Ayodhya was attacked at Godhra on February 27, resulting in the death of 58 people.
