The leader of the Jammu unit of the Shiv Sena, Kalki Maharaj, on Monday roughed up All Party Hurriyat Conference leader Abdul Gani Lone.
Maharaj, accompanied by a few Sena activists and two personal security officers, pushed and kicked Lone while he was talking to a television crew at a hotel in Jammu.
Security officials attempted to restrain Maharaj, but he continued to threaten the Hurriyat leader.
He called the APHC leader a "traitor who has no right to be on the soil of Jammu".
Lone said he would not file any complaint against the Shiv Sena leader. "The assault by these activists is a manifestation of the frustration of the fundamentalist forces," he said.
Earlier, the Hurriyat leader said at a press conference that Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Force chief Yasin Malik should be released from detention since his health was deteriorating. He also sought Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's intervention in the matter.
He made it clear that the Huriyat would not participate in the forthcoming assembly polls, as "elections would not solve the Kashmir problem".
"Kashmir problem can only be resolved by holding tripartite talks involving India, Pakistan and people of Kashmir and not by holding free and fair polls," he said.
