Jaya has no option but to quit: Vaiko

With two cases against her pending in the Supreme Court, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has no option now but to submit her resignation, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary V Gopalasamy aka Vaiko said on Thursday.

As the cases are likely to go beyond the deadline of November 14 by when Jayalalithaa has to become a member of the state assembly, there is no other way for her but to resign, Vaiko told reporters in Coimbatore.

Moreover, he pointed out, the resignation of a member of the assembly to pave the way for Jayalalithaa to contest and announcement of a date for the resultant by-election would require at least a month's time, he said.

Vaiko said the Supreme Court's verdict on the constitutional validity of the swearing in of Jayalalithaa would set an example for the political class of the country.

On the alleged saffronisation of education, Vaiko said, "We are totally against it. Moreover, it would jeopardise the spirit and very integrity of the nation."

Communal feelings, he said, should not be allowed to crop up in the minds of the younger generation through education and as a Dravidian party the MDMK would oppose it.
