Stalin re-elected mayor of Madras

M K Stalin of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was re-elected as the mayor of Madras Municipal Corporation when he defeated All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's N Balaganga by a slender margin of 5,013 votes.

Stalin polled 5,68,451 votes, while Balaganga got 5,63,438 and H Vasanta Kumar of the Congress polled 1,02,696 votes, according to an official announcement early Tuesday.

The margin of victory for Stalin, son of former chief minister M Karunanidhi, has gone down heavily this time. In 1996, he was elected by a margin of 320,000 votes.

Of the 154 wards, AIADMK got 67 followed by DMK with 61.

TMC bagged 14, BJP three, Congress two, MDMK, PMK, CPI and CPI (M) secured one each and independents got three.

The results were announced by Madras Corporation Election Officer A T C Acharayalu, who is also the commissioner of the Madras Corporation.
