Bangladesh Nationalist Party headed by former prime minister Khaleda Zia was heading for a major victory in the parliamentary elections held on Monday, according to state-run television projections broadcast on Tuesday.
Bangladesh Television quoted the Election Commission's 'unofficial results' as giving the BNP-led four-party alliance 73 seats against 18 for its main rival Awami League of ex-premier Sheikh Hasina Wajed.
A total of 299 parliamentary seats were at stake in the elections, which were preceded by violence among political rivals that claimed more than 130 lives.
Out of 73 seats for the BNP-led alliance, Zia's party alone won 68. Five seats went to an Islamic party allied to it.
Zia and Sheikh Hasina, each of whom contested from five constituencies, retained their seats in Parliament.
