The trial of Dara Singh, prime accused in the gruesome murder of Australian missionary Graham Stewart Staines and his two minor sons, was adjourned on Monday till October 9.
The Khurda district sessions judge, Mahendra Nath Patnaik, announced that the trial was being deferred due to the absence of one of the co-accused in the case, Surat Nayak, who had reported sick in Bhubaneswar jail.
The defence counsel, Gayanendra Acharya, informed the court that Nayak was suffering from acute tuberculosis and weakness and therefore could not come.
Acharya requested the court to direct the concerned authorities to provide proper treatment to Nayak and shift him to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
In response to the defence counsel's request, Patnaik said he would ask the Director of Medical Education and Training to constitute a team of doctors to examine Nayak and submit a report by October 9.
"The court will act as per their report," Patnaik said.
