Nepalese cops being trained in guerrilla warfare in Mizoram

Nepalese police personnel are being trained in guerrilla warfare in Mizoram by the Indian army since July last to help the Himalayan kingdom raise a commando force, an intelligence official said in Siliguri on Friday.

The 57 Mountain Division of the army trained the first batch of 120 Nepal police personnel at Vairengti, 500 km from Aizawl, the official said.

The second batch of 120 Nepal police personnel, including 20 officers, left for Mizoram by train on November 27 for 'emergency training' following a sudden rise in the activities of Maoist militants in the kingdom, the official added.

Meanwhile in Nepal, stepping up the offensive against the rebels, the Nepalese army shot dead 81 Maoists and arrested over two-dozen others from different parts of the country.

In the first major strike against the Maoists since emergency was imposed on Monday, the army killed 70 rebels in Salyan district, 500 km west of Kathmandu, when they tried to ambush security personnel, the government mouthpiece Gorkhapatra quoted officials as saying.

It said another 11 guerrillas were killed in Dang district, which was the target of Maoists' attacks last week in which over 70 security personnel lost their lives.

According to the daily, over two dozen Maoist cadres had been arrested in Nawalparasi and Makawanpur districts in central Nepal.

Nepal home ministry sources said patrolling had been intensified in the Terai districts bordering India.

There were also reports of dozens of Maoist cadres resigning from their local parallel governments posts in the wake of intensified military operations against them.
