Imran Khan in Bhubaneswar
Rampaging wild elephants in Jharsuguda block in Orissa have killed two persons in the past two weeks.
Gopal Naik of Kuraibaga village under Jharsuguda block died on the spot after being attacked by a wild tusker last week.
Naik was reportedly trying to shoo away the elephant after it had entered his sugarcane field.
Earlier, an old woman of Gandghora Adivasi Colony under Brajarajnagar police limits died after an attack by the pachyderms, while one Sanjib of Madhuban Nagar escaped with some injuries following an attack on Jharsuguda-Belpahad road.
The recent intrusion by wild elephants in the district and damage caused to the sugarcane and paddy crop by them has created panic.
In some rural pockets, villagers stay indoors after evening fearing elephant attack.
Reports in local newspapers said wild elephants had also entered the Jharsuguda township recently.
Residents, however, drove it off by beating drums and bursting crackers, the report said.
