A day after the imposing a state of emergency in the country, the Nepalese government issued a notice on Tuesday threatening life imprisonment to anyone involved in terrorism.
"Those involved in acts of terrorism or those helping these people would be punished with life imprisonment," the notice said.
King Gyanendra had on Monday declared a state of emergency after weekend Maoists violence left more than 200 people dead.
Under Tuesday's notice, any suspect can be arrested without a warrant and detained for 90 days without framing charges and no court order would be needed to search anyone's home or property.
Those found involved in extortion would be considered terrorists and would be punished, the notice warned.
After the notice was issued, the police detained about a dozen journalists who were working for newspapers sympathetic to the Maoist rebels.
