Vajpayee, Putin begin talks

V S Chandrasekar in Moscow

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Tuesday began one-to-one talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin during which the two leaders are expected to discuss the current global campaign against terrorism and the post-conflict situation in Afghanistan.

The talks will be followed by delegation-level parleys between the two sides in which India will be represented by External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh, National Security Advisor Brajesh Mishra, Foreign Secretary Chokila Iyer and other officials.

The Russian Foreign minister Igor Ivanov will assist President Putin.

After the talks, the Moscow Declaration on International Terrorism will be signed.

The Declaration is expected to unveil their joint strategy to combat terrorism. Another agreement to be signed is the Rs 14,000-crore Kudamgulam Nuclear Power Project to be built with Russian technical assistance.

The project will produce 2000 MW units of power and is expected to be completed by 2006-07.
