Meghalaya ministry jolted as power minister resigns

The one and half year old E K Mawlong-led Meghalaya Parliamentary Forum coalition ministry was severely jolted with the resignation of Power Minister Martle Mukhim from the cabinet late on Wednesday night.

After submitting his resignation to the chief minister, Mukhim said that the coalition government under the leadership of Mawlong had 'failed on many fronts and, as a responsible representative of the people, I prefer to step down from the ministry'.

"I cannot continue to be in the ministry because many of the things going on in the government had taken place without transparency and accountability," Mukhim said in the state capital Shillong.

Mukhim, who belongs to the chief minister's United Democratic Party, said when the Mawlong ministry was formed, it was promised that the government would maintain transparency and accountability in public life, but the government could not keep this commitment.

"Mawlong had made public statement when he became chief minister that he would solve the Meghalaya-Assam border dispute within six months. But one and half years have passed and nothing has been done in this regard," he said.

Mawlong was not available for comment.

The United Democratic Party has 21 members in the ruling 41-member Meghalaya Parliamentary Forum.

Other coalition members are BJP (three), NCP (15) and People's Democratic Movement (two).

The opposition has 19 members in the 60-member assembly. Of the opposition parties, Congress has 15 members, Garo National Council and Hill State People's Democratic Party have one each and there are two independents.
