Hindus in Bangladesh told to go 'home'

Despite Bangladesh's assurances to India to prevent attacks on Hindus, reports of atrocities on the community continue to pour in from across the country.

In the latest incidents, some persons were told to leave their houses and return to India, vernacular daily Janakantha reported on Thursday.

Another daily Bhorer Kagoj reported that while the police managed to persuade about 20 to 25 families of Mathbari village in southern Khulna district to return to their homes, around 70-80 families were still living under constant threat of attack.

In some areas, even Muslims supporting the opposition Awami League of former premier Sheikh Hasina were being subjected to all sorts of repression.

Meanwhile, eminent citizens of the country along with human rights activists held a rally on Wednesday to condemn the attacks and blamed the ruling BNP-Jamaat cadres for the intimidation.

They accused the new government of Khaleda Zia of not taking appropriate steps to address the situation.

Zia had only last week assured Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's special envoy Brajesh Mishra that her government would take steps to protect the minority Hindus who had begun facing attacks in recent weeks.
