Naga talks fail to make headway

Talks between Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's emissary and the dominant underground National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isa-Muivah) Wednesday failed to make headway on the extension of ceasefire beyond Nagaland but a last ditch effort may be made Thursday to salvage the negotiations.

The emissary K Padmanabhaiah, who held two-day parleys with NSCN (I-M) general secretary T Muivah, said "The two sides discussed threadbare all issues but reached no conclusion."

The main problem centered around the area of the ceasefire coverage, he said adding "there are operational issues involved in extending the ceasefire which are creating problems."

He, however, said the two sides may meet again for a "short while" Thursday to discuss the issue.

Muivah said unless the ceasfire coverage issue was made clear "it is meaningless to hold talks."
