Not a major setback, says Narasimha

Space Commission member R Narasimha said that the problem with one of the strap-ons of the Geo-stationary Satellite Launch Vehicle, leading to the failure of its maiden launch, may not pose a serious setback to the programme.

Dr Narasimha told the Press Trust of India in Bangalore on Wednesday that the GSLV's liquid propellant strap-on stages had been retained from the Polar SLV, where they had given a good account of themselves.

"It does not seem like a major setback. Most of the rocket is safe," he noted.

An inquiry would give a more precise picture, he added. "Such things happen everywhere. I am sure that it will be sorted out."

Another Space Commission member, Satish Dhavan, said he saw the telecast live, but declined to comment.
