Thirty-six Manipuri legislators, given a 24-hour deadline to resign by the All-Manipur Students' Association and four other groups, decided on Wednesday to resign en masse if the extension of the ceasefire with Naga militants to their state is not withdrawn by August 1.
The MLAs said they would first go to New Delhi and urge the Centre to retract the extension of ceasefire to Manipur, failing which they would submit their resignations.
The MLAs belong to several political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Samata Party and the Congress. Twenty-four other MLAs reportedly could not attend the meeting. Official sources said several legislators are in hiding, apprehending attacks from the people.
While 10 MLAs are staying at the Imphal police station complex, others have been put up at an undisclosed high-security area, the sources added.
Speaker Sapam Dhananjoy Singh, who was manhandled by the protestors, is staying at the complex of the Second Manipur Rifles Battalion.
