Thirteen protestors killed in Monday's police firing were cremated on Wednesday after the Manipur government allowed the family members to proceed with the final rites.
The mass cremation took place at Kekrupat on the banks of the River Imphal under the shadow of an indefinite curfew.
The army and paramilitary forces threw a security blanket all along the 4km route from the morgue to the cremation site as family members and representatives of the All-Manipur Students' Union and the All-Manipur United Clubs Organisation took the bodies in trucks.
Official sources said 20 members from each victim's family were allowed to take part in the cremation.
Journalists were not allowed to photograph the bodies at the morgue and were also barred from the cremation site.
