Heavy rains and speedy winds moving at speeds between 50-70 kms/hr on Tuesday hit coastal Orissa at Puri, Paradip and Erasama.
The rainfall is expected to continue for the next 24 hours and fishermen had been told not to venture into the sea for the next 48 hours.
Power supply in many parts of Puri and other coastal areas had been affected.
Puri has been flooded as the rain water could not be drained due to a faulty sewage system.
Speaking to rediff.com, Dr D K Gupta, Director, Indian Meteorological Department, Bhubaneshwar, said, "There is no cyclone threat but there is a cyclonic depression off Paradip and heavy rainfall is expected over the next 24 hours."
In October 1999, a severe cyclone had hit Orissa wrecking havoc in 14 coastal districts. Over 10,000 persons were officially stated to have died with the worst affected being Jagatsinghpur district.
