Bandh affects normal life in Manipur

The 72-hour bandh in four hill districts of Manipur from Monday midnight has hit normal life in Senapati, Ukhrul, Tamenglong and partly in Chandel, even as a 66-hour bandh at two vital national highways is scheduled to begin on Tuesday night, official sources said.

However, life was normal at Kangpokpi town in Senapati district and at Pallel and Moreh border towns in Chandel district, the sources said.

Traffic between state capital Imphal and the hill districts remained suspended due to the bandh called by the United Naga Council and Naga Youth Front to protest the Centre's decision to limit the ceasefire to Nagaland, the reports said.

No untoward incident was reported and paramilitary forces were deployed at several places in the hill region.

The 66-hour bandh on NH 39 (Imphal-Dimapur) and NH 53 (Imphal-Silchar), both of which pass through the hill districts, has been called by the Manipur Students Federation.

The federation is protesting against the Centre's alleged attempt to divide people in the hill and valley on the ceasefire issue and the "hidden agenda" while trying to settle problems with the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Issac-Muivah).
