Hayat to head govt in Pak-occupied Kashmir

Muhammad Najeeb in Islamabad

Sikandar Hayat of the Muslim Conference was on Tuesday elected prime minister of the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, defeating Sultan Mehmood of the Pakistan People's Party.

Hayat secured 30 votes and Mehmood 17 in the 48-member assembly, which held a special session to elect the leader of the house, the speaker and the deputy speaker.

Hayat, whose party secured a majority in the July 5 election, becomes the prime minister for the second time.

Sayab Khalid and Sanaullah Qadri of the Muslim Conference were elected speaker and deputy speaker respectively.

Muslim Conference chief Abdul Qayyum is expected to become president of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir when elections for the post are held later this year. He will replace Ibrahim Khan.
