The Andhra Pradesh police has sought a non-bailable warrant against former Congress minister and prominent social activist Roda Mistry in connection with a child adoption racket.
The police told a Hyderabad court that she was absconding and evading arrest.
However, her family said she was ailing.
The Crime Investigation Department, which is investigating the adoption racket that was exposed three months ago, filed a charge sheet against eight people, including Roda Mistry, in the court on Tuesday.
A delay in lodging the charge sheet would have entitled Mistry for a mandatory bail as per section 167(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Incidentally, the charge sheet was filed within 60 days of the arrest of Anita Sen, prime accused in the case. Sen is the wife of Additional Director General of Police Swaranjit Sen.
She had surrendered before the court on May 19.
The charge sheet alleged that the accused had entered into criminal conspiracy to operate unauthorised child adoption centres for monetary considerations.
Anita Sen, who was the president and executive director of Precious Moments, from where 54 infants and seven grown-up children were rescued in April, is lodged in the Chanchalguda central prison in Hyderabad. So far, she has not been able to secure bail.
