Hours after Manipur legislators demanded the withdrawal of the extension of Naga ceasefire from the state, the Nagas living in Manipur opposed the move.
The United Naga Council of Manipur and the All Naga Students Association of Manipur in a joint press conference on Saturday supported the move by the government of India to extend the ceasefire.
A memorandum submitted by both groups to the Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said, "The UNC and the ANSAM would like to applaud the political will of the government of India in extending the Indo-Naga Ceasefire for another one year without any territorial limits."
They urged the government not to succumb to pressures exerted by various other organisations to revoke the extension of the ongoing ceasefire with National Socialist Council of Nagaland.
According to them more than 400000 Nagas live in the four districts of Manipur Chandel, Ukhrul, Senapati and Tamenglong.
They warned that the opposition by the Meiteis and others to the initiative for ushering in peace to the Naga areas in Manipur and elsewhere will only lead to 'intensification of militarisation'.
