Widespread sit-in protests in Manipur

Various part of Manipur witnessed large-scale sit-in demonstrations to protest the Naga ceasefire extension during the 12-hour curfew relaxation period on Tuesday, official sources said.

It forced authorities to further tighten security, the sources added.

The protestors, particularly women, started the sit-in protests at several parts after curfew was relaxed from 0500 hours, the sources said.

At Lilong in Thoubal district people tried to take out a procession defying prohibitory orders but were dispersed by police, the sources said.

Meanwhile, several organisations, including Naga bodies, continued to express their opposition to the ceasefire extension.

At Keikhu in Imphal East district, a joint meeting of all communities appealed to Nagas who had left the valley to return to their homes, a report said.

The report added that the meeting also resolved to work for peace and communal harmony in the region.

Meanwhile, the state council of the All India Students Federation on Tuesday demanded immediate dismissal of the National Democratic Alliance government for "killing democracy in Manipur and eroding the very fabric of the Constitution."

In a memorandum to President K R Narayanan, MSC secretary S Sanglen Meitei said, "The extension of the ceasefire to Manipur implied conceding ground to the National Socialist Council of Nagaland's demand for a greater Nagaland."
