Accused in Gulshan case remanded
to police custody till Feb 5

An accused in the sensational murder of cassette king Gulshan Kumar, Abdul Rauf alias Dawood Merchant was Wednesday produced in a local court in Bombay and remanded to police custody till February 5.

Rauf was arrested in Calcutta on January 8 and was later handed over to the city police for investigation by the Calcutta magisterial court on an application filed by the Bombay police.

Inspector Arun Bagade, investigation officer in the case, had deposed before court and requested police custody for the accused, since the police have to carry out investigations, as seven more accused are absconding, and hence require to interrogate the accused.

Kumar, owner of T-Series Industries, was gunned down two years back, allegedly by a member of the Chhota Shakeel gang at Juhu, in north-west Bombay.

Ramesh Torani, owner of Tips music company and music director Nadeem Saifee currently in London, are the other two accused in the case. While Torani is out on bail, efforts are on by the city police to deport Nadeem to India for facing trial.

Another accused turned approver Abdul Aziz Sheikh had made allegations against the Bombay police that he was forced to make a confession under pressure.

The approver had also alleged that police had lured him with offerings in case he turned approver.

The police, however, denied the charges and said that the arrest of Rauf will shed fresh light on the case and more evidence can be gathered against the accused and those absconding.

Additional chief metropolitan magistrate Usha Iyer, while granting police custody to the accused, asked him whether he faced any problems with the police, to which Rauf answered in the negative.
