Inadequate security fails to deter Sonia from visiting Kumbh

Undeterred by the Kumbh Mela administration's inability to provide her adequate security cover, Congress President Sonia Gandhi is arriving in Allahabad on Monday afternoon.

The Mela administration had expressed its inability on Sunday to provide adequate security for Gandhi. Senior Superintendent of Police Alok Sharma said Gandhi's staff had been informed of the "factual" position on the shortage of security personnel. "...In the case of Ms Gandhi, a VVIP with the highest Z-plus security, it has been made amply clear that it would not be possible for the police administration to ensure adequate number of police personnel for her," he had said.

But Deputy Inspector General (Allahabad range) S K Garg told the United News of India in Allahabad on Monday morning that keeping in view Gandhi's VVIP status, the administration had decided to do its best to ensure her safety.

Besides paying obeisance at the Saraswati Ghat, the Congress chief will visit the camps of the shankaracharya of Dwarka and Jyotish peeths, Swami Swaroopananda Saraswati, Satpal Maharaj, a former Union minister and head of a religious congregation, and the Congress Sewa Dal in the Kumbh Mela area.

She is expected to stay at Swaraj Bhawan in Allahabad and will leave for Delhi on Tuesday morning, sources said.
