Kalinga award revived

A correspondent in Bhubaneshwar

The Kalinga award for science and technology has been revived.

The award, presented by the Kalinga Trust, instituted by the late Biju Patnaik, was to be discontinued as the award money of 1000 pounds was found to be too little to merit international recognition.

In 1951, Biju Patnaik had donated 10,000 pound sterlings and the award money is given from the annual interest earned on this amount.

The jury formed at UNESCO had written to the trust that unless the award money was hiked, the award should be discontinued.

The state government was approached, but since the trust is a private body, the government refused to come to its aid.

However, trust secretary Bimal Das revealed that after a meeting it was decided to hike the money to 2000 pounds from 2001 .

Additional money will be raised from various sources, said Das, who added that there was a move to make the award amount 5000 pounds soon.
