Orissa tailor attempts Guinness record

A tailor from Orissa has probably set a world record in sewing continuously for over nine hours, which is likely to give him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records soon.

Thirtynine-year-old A V Giri, from Jeypore town in coastal Orissa, worked continuously on a sewing machine for nine hours 25 seconds.

According to an official of the Jeypore Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Giri set the record on January 1, 2001.

Giri started his way to the record by sewing from 09:30 hours IST before a huge gathering on the Vedika lawns in Jeypore. He did not eat or drink anything during his sewing.

Giri told rediff.com over the telephone after he set the record that the Guinness authorities in London had given him permission to go ahead with the feat, which was recorded on video. This recording was sent to London for a certificate from the Guinness authorities.

Giri has been in the tailoring line for two decades and started preparing two years back to break the record.
