MLAs charged with feasting
on deer meat in Orissa

Twelve legislators, who visited the Bijtarkanika wildlife sanctuary, allegedly feasted on deer meat at the Dangamala forest rest-house a few days back.

The legislators were part of a House committee on scheduled caste and scheduled tribe welfare, headed by Jogendra Behera.

Manoj Satpathy, president of the Manav Sabha Parishad, has filed a police complaint. Since his complaint was not received by the inspector-in-charge of Kendrapara police station, he submitted it to the superintendent of police.

The complaint alleged that forest officials arranged for the deer meat for the VIP guests after killing two deer.

Behera, however, denied the allegation. "There was no deer meat and it is all fabricated," he insisted. The divisional forest officer, Kendrapara, also denied the claim.

A number of district officials were present and it is alleged that there is an attempt to cover up the crime.

Killing spotted deer is a crime according to wildlife laws and while the chief wildlife warden does not have information regarding the incident at the forest rest-house, he believes that permission for the killing could not have been given by any forest official.
