Police arrest poachers' guide

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Uttaranchal police have arrested a man who allegedly acted as a guide to the poachers responsible for killing five tuskers in the Jim Corbett Park in the past month-and-a-half.

The arrest has not yet been formally announced. Reliable sources said the man has been interrogated and senior officials are confident that he would lead them to the poachers.

The have the indicated the gang is based in the northeast as is evident by its style of poaching, including the use of poisoned arrows.

It was only after the third elephant was killed and its post-mortem was done that the park authorities realised that the poachers were not using bullets, but iron nails supported by shafts carrying deadly poison.

The Central Bureau of Investigation and other investigating agencies are also likely to question the arrested man.
