Pak announces $ 100 mn
aid for Afghanistan

Pakistan on Saturday termed the installation of the new Hamid Karzai-led administration in Afghanistan a "welcome augury" and announced a $ 100 million aid for the reconstruction of the war-torn country.

Greeting the new administration, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf in a message to Karzai said Islamabad would soon reopen its embassy and four consulates after finalising administrative arrangements in consultations with the new government.

"The Government of Pakistan looks forward to working with the Afghan administration for the strengthening of co-operation between the two countries that are neighbours, friends and brothers," Musharraf, who is touring China said.

"The people of Pakistan wish and pray for the success of the new administration. Representing the first step in the implementation of the Bonn Agreement, the transfer of power to the interim administration is a welcome augury for the beginning of a new era of national reconciliation, peace and unity in Afghanistan," he said.

He also announced a $ 100 million humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan's reconstruction programme.

In addition to this, Pakistan has also removed existing restrictions on the export of goods that may be needed for the reconstruction of Afghanistan, he added.
