V Perumal, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham MLA from Saidapet, in central Madras, died on Monday morning of a heart attack.
Perumal complained of chest pain while taking part in the DMK rally on Sunday and was rushed to a hospital.
The MLA succumbed to what doctors diagnosed as a massive heart attack.
Meanwhile, the toll in Sunday's police action against DMK activists now stands at six. Over a hundred others, including an estimated 20 journalists, have been admitted to hospitals with injuries.
Police had used teargas, rubber bullets and resorted to lathi-charges against the DMK activists who took out the rally protesting against the June 30 arrest of party chief and former chief minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi and Union ministers Murasoli Maran and T R Baalu.
