India keen on border demarcation with Bangladesh

India on Thursday said that it was in favour of an early demarcation of the boundary with Bangladesh to prevent recurrence of border skirmishes.

''We are keen to settle the border demarcation as early as possible,'' a spokesman of the Ministry of External Affairs said. ''It has been our desire and effort to resolve residual matters with Bangladesh.''

The two countries had set up two joint working groups in January to resolve the boundary issue.

The working groups will address the issue of 6.5 kms of undemarcated border as well as the question of 'adverse possessions'. The two countries have amicably demarcated 3,993 km of boundary.

He maintained that the recent border row was the result of 'unwarranted and unprovoked' action of the Bangladesh Rifles in the Meghalaya sector.
