AIADMK member attempts self-immolation

An All India Anna DMK worker allegedly set himself ablaze at Azhinjikuppam in Vellore on Tuesday, following rejection of his party leader J Jayalalitha's nomination papers.

Police sources said S Ekambaram, on hearing the news, doused himself with kerosene and set himself on fire.

Passersby put out the fire and rushed him to hospital, where his condition was stated to be critical.

Krishnagiri, one of the places from where she had filed her nomination, had witnessed dramatic scenes with AIADMK men demonstrating against the ``injustice'' by hurling chairs in returning officer's office on Tuesday.

They also resorted to a road blockade. AIADMK leaders M Thambidurai and K P Munusamy were arrested by the police.

Jayalalitha Wednesday said she was worried on hearing that about the self-immolation.

In a statement in Madras, she appealed to party workers to desist from such activities. She had the will and conviction to fight her opponents, she said.

Despite her disqualification, Jayalalitha said that she would go ahead with canvassing for the AIADMK-led Democratic Secular Front.
